Let me guess this straight... I am NOT the green thumb of the family. My husband requested a raised planter where he could start an herb garden.
I decided to add the raised side panels with mesh to keep out animals and of course a door for easy access.
This whole build is made with just screws, glue and cedar boards so its nice and beginner friendly.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Make 4 legs by screwing two leg pieces together to form an L shape. Screw in from the sides with wood glue.
2. Attach the side panels to the inside of the legs using the 1" screws and wood glue. Make sure to leave a 1/4" gap between each board.
I used a piece of 1/4" plywood to get accurate spacing.
3. Attach the front & back panels to the inside of the legs using the 1" screws and wood glue.
Make sure to leave 1/4"gap between each board.
4. Attach the slat supports to the bottom of the planter inside. Make sure it is flush with the bottom. Use 1" screws and wood glue.
5. Attach the inner slats with 1" screws. Space them apart as evenly as possible.
6. Screw in the inner board supports evenly around the planter with 1" screws.
7. Attach the shelf supports to the bottom of the planter. They should be 3.5" up from the bottoom of the leg to the bottom of the support.
8. Attach the bottom shelf slats on top of the shelf supports with 1" screws. Space them apart as evenly as you can.
9. Screw in the front and back ledger boards to the top of the planter with 1" screws and wood glue.
Make sure the ledger board is flush with the front and back of the planter.
10. Put the side panels together. Screw the panel in from the bottom from the small ledger board.
The screws for the side panels should go in from the side. Use 2" screws.
11. Screw the side panels through the small ledger board into the sides of the planter. Use wood glue and 1" screws.
12. Screw the trellis in through the top of the bottom board of the trellis through to the ledger board.
Then screw in through the back side of the trellis through the side panels for added support.
Use 2" screws.
13. Put the door together with 2" screws and wood glue. 2 screws should go in through the top and bottom of the door.
14. Sit the door on the front of the planter. Using the hinges, line the door up to the front of the ledger board and screw the hinges into the the ledger board and the door.
Attach the small locks to keep the door up on the side of the door into the side of the panels.
15. Staple in the mesh to the side panels and door from the inside of the planter.
Optional: if you want to hide the staples, double up the boards for the side panels and screw them onto the inside of the side panels to hide the staples.
16. I used Thompsons water sealer to protect from the weather but you can use any outdoor paint or stain!
